Recent Brisbane full time graduate Lloyd explains his approach to the design and planning behind the Southbank Corporation's 2010–2011 Annual Report.
"A brain storming session flagged a concern that often Annual Reports receive a quick flick through from the reader, then discarded, so with an open brief I decided this annual report needed to be two things 1. interesting and 2. environmentally sound. I came up with the a concept of “life beyond the book”, I wanted to be sure that when this Annual Report reached the end of it’s life, my work would not be harmful to the environment.
I sourced recycled paper made from 100% post consumer waste (made in Australia – surprisingly hard to find), and a printer that used vegetable based inks. In addition to this I found a specialist company who made paper with daisy seeds impregnated into each sheet and I used this at the beginning of each chapter. It feels great to know that the book will only bloom with flowers when disregarded with no impact on the environment what so ever. I also decided to have the Annual Report delivered on bicycle in the Brisbane area to further the environmental credentials. So before even designing a lot of conceptual and planning work was completed.
From a design perspective I planned out a few of the key pages such as the Board of Directors and Executive Management Team then commissioned a photographer to shoot a series of images with plenty of negative space for my text. With the rest of the images I wanted to capture an earthy and green element to every shot to help with the through line of a sustainable Annual Report. Strong clean lines with margins and light weight text helped keep the overall theme clean, strong and professional.
I’m very happy with the overall look and feel, the seeded paper makes for an interesting and tactile feature throughout and I love the rough texture."
