Did you know that there are currently more than 58,000 flight paths across the globe? And that Atlanta, Georgia is the busiest airport in the world?

Transportation planner Michael Markieta has spent the past year developing these amazing visualisations of the globe's hectic flight paths, helping us to better understand how our air space is used. Working on the project in his spare time, he used geographical information systems (GIS) to create 'maps'. Lighter shades of blue represent shorter, overlapping flights, and darker shades for longer flights with little or no overlap.
