So, we all think that retouching the image of a model for say, a magazine, is a relatively new thing but Gil Elvgren was doing it from the 1930's. He's known as one of the best pin-up artists in American illustration history and his paintings are, not only superb, but cheeky and fun as well. As you can see, he would paint from original photos and use just a little bit of artistic lisence to 'improve' on his already beautiful models just a little bit. Here's some before and after images...
