This week our FT students have just been tested on their knowledge on the basics of the anatomy of a typeface (all of whom passed with flying colours – clever bunch!). We think they're ready for a bit of advanced theory… and where better to start than this beautiful new publication by Stephen Coles: The Geometry of Type.

This read offers a detailed exploration into the world of the ascender, stem, crossbar & counter… then going even deeper still, analysing brackets, ears, overshoots & shoulders, across a variety of modern typefaces.

A worthy & necessary read for any type fanatic. However, Truth Creative in Manchester would argue that this kind of knowledge & attention to detail in typography, should be part of every graphics designer's toolkit. We agree.
