For all of those briefs where you're trying to channel a bit of vintage love, it helps to look beyond just modern recreations of the vintage aesthetic, and actually back at the original work itself. Plenty of resources abound, including Taschen's excellent 'Type. A Visual History of Typefaces & Graphic Styles. 1628–1900' (both the first and second volume come with details to give you access to high res scans of many of the works within) — and quite possibly you've come across the ever-lovely vintagemeohmy blog. Recently given a bit of a facelift it's now more beautiful than ever, testament to San Franciso-based founder, Megan Cummins' obsession with the beauty of vintage type and all its embellishments.

One of the things I love most about this blog is that it covers the gamut of what you might term 'vintage' in aesthetic, covering the original stuff itself (think 1800s) and also contemporary interpretation and remix of the elements.

Definitely worth a look.
