I was drawn to the geometric shapes utilised in the packaging design for Xylo Eyewear created by FIVE EIGHT, at the time unaware that this was a Greek design studio. It wasn’t until I read on about the brief for this product that I realised the geometric shapes I was drawn to were very familiar to me. FIVE EIGHT had utilised designs painted on homes in a village on the greek island of Chios where my I met my husband and lived for almost 2 years called Pyrgi. Having just studied the work of Peter Saville for my history assignment whose design ethos was to take the old and blend it with modern type and techniques, made me realise that even a design studio in Greece of all places also used this method.
We were also learning about the importance of colour that week and I loved the warm feeling of the “craving the sun” image. Being that the product (sunglasses) is made from the unusual material “wood” the natural feel to the packaging and simplicity of the type surrounding the logo is nice.
